About Andy

About Andy McGregor - 5' 7", 65-68kg experienced sportsboat sailor. I've previously campaigned as bowman in 1720s (8 metre assymetric, similar to J80) when the fleet was big and very competitive. Sailed in many Europeans, Nationals, Regionals, Southern Area, Spring/Winter Series, Cowes Week, RTI, Cork Week, etc, etc.

Sailing History - Currently crew on Sonars, J80s, J70s and 1720s from Brighton Marina or Cowes and usually finish "in the chocolates". Started sailing in Mirrors in Christchurch harbour in the early1970s and have crewed on many boats up to J109.

Sailing Aspirations - I'm happiest as jib trim and spinnaker trim but comfortable in any position except helm. I'm always up for crewing, especially on small keelboats. If I had a choice I'd prefer a lively and up for it mature crew but I'm happy to fit in anywhere with a crew who are serious about enjoying sportsboat racing. I'm a fit and surprisingly agile 60 year old dance teacher - this is my second career after 30 years in healthcare. Happy on the foredeck and pleased(ish) to go up the mast, etc. Able to step straight into bow, middle/forward or mainsheet on a Sonar, 1720, J80 or J70. And there's always a better helm than me on board, especially in the starts! I live in Shoreham by Sea near Brighton but have usually sailed out of Hamble or Cowes - however, I'd be delighted to join anyone racing in/from the Brighton area..

Crew Wardrobe - this is a particular thing of mine. We need to look like a winning team and I always aim to win the faint praise of being "best dressed crew". One Cowes week we won "most photogenic crew" - a great honour - at least until the next day when a prize was awarded for "most photogenic sinking"! We got the message ...

.. you can see me modelling that particular crew shirt in the photo of me recovering the kite on a 1720 at the head of this blog.
