Poles
This is an area which seems to result in a lot of penalties. Rule C.8.3(b)(ii) regarding poles states;
"To extend the bowsprit a boat shall be in the process of either a continuous hoist, flying or a continuous retrieval of the gennaker. At all other times the bowsprit shall be retracted .. "
In other words, the sail must be on the move immediately the pole is extended and must be retracted as part of the drop.
Just to add some controversy, here's a penalty being given for this infringement. Is it fair? They don't think so ...
